Canon’s portable VR camera

Canon has showcased a prototype of its first 360/180 3D VR camera, tentatively stepping into the realm of virtual reality, at the Photo Next 2023 fair in Yokohama, Japan.
The unnamed, foldable camera prototype can capture 360-degree footage when folded and 180-degree 3D content when unfolded.
Notably, the product seems aimed at the consumer market, differing from Canon's previous VR products which were professional-oriented.
Takeaways
This camera prototype marks Canon's shift towards VR, following its release of the RF 5.2mm f/2.8 L Dual Fisheye Lens and the EOS R5 C for full-scale video production.
The device's foldable design allowing for both 360-degree and 180-degree 3D capture reflects a significant innovation in camera technology.
The foldable design is similar to the new Insta360 EVO camera.
Despite the VR camera market being relatively niche, Canon's entry signals potential market expansion, especially with the potential growth of VR with Apple's new Vision Pro headset.
