What McKinsey’s Generative AI Report Means for Virtual Production

McKinsey released a 68 page report on the economic potential of generative AI. You can scan through the whole thing here. There’s also a good twitter thread breakdown here.
Here are the key takeaways that relate to media and virtual production:
A potential $100 billion of value created from generative AI in the media and entertainment space, with the biggest growth sectors in marketing and sales & product and R&D.
Potential of automating 90.5% of data processing and 79% of data collecting with generative AI
Estimates of when generative AI will be able to match human-level abilities have ramped up from their previous 2017 estimates.
Predictions of when AI will be able to match top-quartile abilities in:
Natural-language generation: 2024
Natural-language understanding: 2024
Generating novel patterns and categories: 2024
Creativity: 2025
The report didn’t have much about text-to-image or video creation except a few passing mentions.
That’s obviously one of the most immediate applications for virtual sets, with companies like Blockade Labs able to generate 360° environments from text and sketch and Vū mentioning their 2.5 D generative AI environments in our NAB interview.
