Molli and Max in a Miniature, Virtual Future

In this episode of VP Land, we chat with Steve Dabal, co-founder of The Family production house and VP Supervisor of Molli and Max in the Future, a sci-fi rom-com that pushed the boundaries of what's possible with virtual production on a limited budget.

A few key insights:

  • Director Michael Litwak and DP Zach Stoltzfus created the majority of the film's environments using miniatures, which were then composited and displayed on LED screens during production.

  • By spending a year and a half in pre-production to establish a unique visual style (and having a background in VFX), the filmmakers were able to maintain a consistent look throughout the movie, despite the limitations of a low budget.

  • Dabal also touches on the evolving landscape of virtual production, from his early experiments with VR and photogrammetry to the potential impact of AI on indie filmmaking.

Watch our full conversation to dive deeper into how they used both LED screens and rear projection, tricks for using LUTs to adjust the environment’s color quickly, and how they used Blackmagic hardware to create remote workflows during production and post.
