Sony's Extension System Mini Shrinks VENICE 2 Sensor into Pocket-Sized Powerhouse

Sony introduces the Extension System Mini for VENICE 2, packing an 8K sensor in a compact box that offers significant size and weight advantages for high-end productions. The detachable sensor system will begin shipping in August with a list price of $25,000.

More Than a Name Game: The industry will likely call it the Rialto Mini, continuing from the original VENICE extension system, though Sony hasn't trademarked that term.

The Extension System Mini represents a major shrinking of the external sensor concept:

  • Measures just over 2 inches wide, making it significantly more compact than previous designs

  • Features native E-mount with included PL adapter (LPL adapters available separately)

  • Uses individual drop-in ND filters (0-2.4 stops) rather than the rotating turret system in the VENICE

  • Includes a detachable cable allowing easier routing through tight spaces

Technical Connections: The Mini trades some connectivity for its smaller footprint while maintaining essential functionality.

Notable technical specifications include:

  • 8K sensor compatible with both 6K and 8K VENICE 2 bodies

  • Lighter cable system with no SDI output directly from the sensor head

  • Retains Fischer 3-pin connector for run/stop functionality

  • 24-volt power output

  • Two programmable user buttons (3 and 5)

  • Camera outputs remain accessible through the main VENICE 2 body

Production Pipeline Perspective: This release comes as remote camera heads become increasingly essential for complex shooting scenarios.

The sensor-in-a-box design offers significant workflow advantages:

  • Installation requires removing the original camera sensor and attaching the Extension System Mini

  • Particularly valuable for drone, gimbal, and tight-space cinematography

  • Maintains the VENICE 2's image quality while dramatically reducing the front-end profile

  • Pricing positions it as a professional accessory for rental houses and production companies
