Volinga and XGRIDS have teamed up to create a complete pipeline that takes environments from LiDAR scan to production-ready 3D Gaussian Splatting in Unreal Engine within hours. The partnership combines XGRIDS' multi-SLAM LiDAR capture technology with Volinga's advanced Unreal Engine plugin, enabling direct import and real-time rendering of photoreal 3D environments with full virtual production support.

Production-Critical Benefits: The integration delivers spatially precise assets with advanced creative tools, including re-lighting, full ACES color management, and seamless compatibility with nDisplay, VCam, and Depth of Field features in Unreal Engine.

Behind the Lens: Mobile scanning eliminates the specialized skills traditionally required for high-quality splat capture.

The partnership addresses several persistent challenges in 3D environment creation. XGRIDS' SLAM sensors remove the technical barriers that have historically made 3D Gaussian Splatting capture accessible only to specialists. Users can now confidently capture high-quality splats with minimal training using XGRIDS hardware.

The workflow simplifies what was once a complex process:

  • Capture environments with XGRIDS' Lixel scanners or the new PortalCam

  • Process scans into 3DGS models using LCC Studio, XGRIDS' engine for transforming scan data

  • Export the model as a PLY file

  • Import directly into Unreal Engine with the Volinga Plugin

  • Apply re-lighting, grading, and VP-specific adjustments in Unreal Engine

  • Deploy to LED walls or VP setups via nDisplay, Disguise, or Pixera

Set Extensions: This partnership emerged organically from creators already combining both technologies in their workflows.

The collaboration developed naturally as more users began integrating the two technologies, including projects like Picture from Auschwitz and District Cinema Virtual Pre-production. The growing overlap between Volinga and XGRIDS users made formal partnership a logical progression.

At XGRIDS, our mission has always been to make high-quality spatial data truly usable — not just for specialists, but for creators across industries. Partnering with Volinga allows us to close the loop: from fast, accurate mobile scanning to photoreal, production-ready 3DGS environments in Unreal Engine — all in a matter of hours.

Sunny Liao, Head of Global Business at XGRIDS

The partnership delivers four key production advantages:

  • Reduced learning curve for adopting 3DGS workflows

  • High-quality, spatially precise assets for production-critical projects

  • Full Unreal Engine feature support for virtual production, broadcast, and immersive experiences

  • Faster turnaround times, taking environments from scan to shoot-ready in record time

Post-Production Pipeline: The integration supports full virtual production workflows with professional-grade color management and rendering features.

Volinga's Unreal Engine plugin provides the most advanced solution for integrating 3DGS into professional virtual production environments. The system supports complete workflows demanded by production teams, including advanced re-lighting capabilities and full ACES color management integration.

Volinga at this year’s NAB Show:

This partnership bridges the gap between reality capture and real-time storytelling. By combining XGRIDS' accurate, easy-to-use LiDAR capture with Volinga's advanced rendering and integration capabilities, we're giving creators and studios the speed, precision, and flexibility they need to bring real-world environments into production.

Fernando Rivas Manzaneque, CEO and Co-Founder of Volinga

The XGRIDS to Volinga pipeline is available now for Unreal Engine versions 5.3 through 5.6. Users simply export Gaussian Splat models from LCC Studio as PLY files and import them into the Volinga Plugin for Unreal Engine.

Wrap Party: The teams will showcase this pipeline integration at IBC Amsterdam.

This partnership represents a significant step forward in making high-quality 3D environment creation accessible to a broader range of creators. By eliminating technical barriers and reducing turnaround times from days to hours, the Volinga-XGRIDS pipeline could reshape how productions approach virtual set extensions and environment creation.

The combined solution dramatically reduces both time and cost traditionally associated with building real-world environments for production. The IBC launch event will provide hands-on demonstrations of the complete workflow from capture to final render.
