Flow and Veo 3: Google's Big AI Updates

Google announced a bunch of new updates at I/O 2025, but the two biggest in the Gen AI space were Flow and Veo 3, giving creators AI-powered filmmaking tools that generate video with synchronized audio.

Flow combines Google's most advanced AI models into a single platform, while Veo 3 marks the first time an AI video generator creates dialogue, ambient sounds, and background music alongside visuals.

  • Flow integrates Veo, Imagen, and Gemini models into one filmmaking interface that lets you create cinematic clips using natural language prompts, maintain character consistency across scenes, and control camera movements with presets.

  • Veo 3 has improved video quality and generates audio for the first time, creating ambient sounds, background noise, and character dialogue with improved lip-syncing and physics simulation that outperforms competitors like Sora and Runway

  • Pricing is still steep - Flow requires Google AI Pro ($20/month for limited features) or Ultra ($250/month for full access including Veo 3 and audio generation)

  • Enhanced creative controls include reference-powered video for character consistency, camera controls for precise shot composition, and scene-building tools to extend existing shots (only with Veo 2. Veo 3 is currently text-to-video only).

Google also introduced SynthID Detector to help identify AI-generated content across multiple media types, and announced Google Beam, the commercial evolution of Project Starline that creates 3D video conferencing experiences without headsets.

PYXIS 12K: Cinema Power Under $5500

The Blackmagic PYXIS 12K delivers flagship cinema quality at an unprecedented $5,495 price point, featuring the same revolutionary 12K RGBW sensor found in high-end URSA Cine cameras.

This compact powerhouse shoots full-frame 12K footage with 16 stops of dynamic range—matching ARRI and RED performance levels while maintaining the modular design that made the PYXIS 6K so popular with professionals.

Key advantages that set PYXIS 12K apart:

  • No-crop flexibility: Shoot 4K, 8K, or 12K using the full sensor area without changing field of view—eliminating the typical resolution compromises

  • High-speed performance: Record up to 112fps in 8K and 60fps in 12K, with improved sensor response times reducing global shutter needs

  • Professional connectivity: Dual CFExpress slots, 10Gb Ethernet, and USB-C recording enable modern cloud workflows and high-speed transfers

  • Anamorphic ready: True 6:5 anamorphic shooting without cropping, plus multiple aspect ratio options for maximum creative control

  • Post-production friendly: Blackmagic RAW codec makes massive 12K files manageable while preserving full color and exposure control

The PYXIS 12K represents a fundamental shift in what's possible under $5,500, giving you the resolution flexibility and image quality previously reserved for cameras costing five times more.

Aronofsky, Google DeepMind Team for AI Films

Darren Aronofsky’s new studio, Primordial Soup, has partnered with Google DeepMind to explore how generative AI can be used as a creative tool in filmmaking. Their first collaborative project, a short film blending live-action and AI-generated imagery, will premiere at the Tribeca Festival—marking a significant step in merging technology and storytelling.

  • Primordial Soup, Aronofsky’s AI-focused studio, is working with Google DeepMind to give filmmakers early access to cutting-edge generative video tools, aiming to integrate AI into the creative process rather than replace human artists.

  • The partnership’s first film, Ancestra, directed by Eliza McNitt, fuses live-action performances with AI-generated visuals—such as cosmic and microscopic worlds—and debuts at Tribeca on June 13, followed by a panel moderated by Aronofsky.

  • Google’s new AI tools, including the Veo 3 video model and Flow editing platform, are central to the project, helping filmmakers visualize complex scenes and solve practical production challenges.

  • Two additional AI-driven short films are in development under this collaboration, continuing the exploration of how AI can expand creative possibilities for storytellers.

  • The initiative underscores a broader industry trend: major tech companies are teaming up with filmmakers to shape the future of AI-enhanced storytelling, while emphasizing the need for artists to guide the ethical and creative use of these new tools.

Jony Ive Joins OpenAI After $6.5B Acquisition

OpenAI has announced its largest acquisition to date, purchasing io—the product-development startup founded by legendary iPhone designer Jony Ive—in a $6.5 billion all-stock deal. This move brings Ive and his team of 55 engineers, designers, and researchers into the OpenAI fold.

  • Deal Details: OpenAI is acquiring io for $6.5 billion in stock, integrating the entire io team and marking its biggest acquisition so far.

  • Jony Ive’s Role: Ive, best known for designing the iPhone, will take on significant creative and design responsibilities across all OpenAI and io projects, though his design firm LoveFrom will remain independent.

  • Product Vision: The collaboration aims to develop a new family of AI-driven consumer devices, with early reports hinting at products that go “beyond screens”—possibly including headphones or camera-equipped devices.

Emily Chang reports from Abilene, Texas with an exclusive first look at the $500B AI megaproject—where Sam Altman, Masayoshi Son, and Oracle are teaming up to build one of the world’s largest data centers.
