Welcome to VP Land! Hedra just unveiled Live Avatars, interactive AI agents capable of delivering real-time, human-like conversations. Add this to the list of real-time AI developments, like MirageLSD from earlier this week.

In our last poll, most of you said Netflix's approach to using generative AI in filmmaking is great for ambitious shots and opens doors for indie creators. Check out today’s poll below.

Hedra Unveils Real-Time Interactive AI Avatars

Hedra announced Live Avatars, interactive AI agents that deliver real-time, human-like conversations for customer support, onboarding, and training applications.

  • Live Avatars enable multi-turn conversations that adapt to user intent, moving beyond scripted chatbot responses to deliver free-form dialog that feels natural and contextually aware.

  • The technology combines advanced large language models with real-time rendering engines and neural text-to-speech synthesis to create avatars that respond instantly with accurate lip-sync and emotional expressiveness.

  • Unlike static digital assistants, these avatars can be deployed across multiple platforms including web, mobile, and AR/VR environments, offering 24/7 availability while maintaining consistent brand personality.

  • The AI avatar market is experiencing rapid consolidation around companies like D-ID, RAVATAR, and Colossyan, with differentiation increasingly focused on conversation quality and personalization capabilities rather than basic animation features.

Shotbuddy Brings Order to AI Video Production

Filmmaker Albert Bozesan has released Shotbuddy, an open-source application designed to manage AI-driven image-to-video filmmaking workflows. The tool addresses the growing need for organized project management as creators increasingly rely on AI-generated assets in their productions.

  • Shotbuddy provides structured shot management that organizes shots, tracks versions, and supports integration of AI-generated image and video assets within a single interface.

  • The application offers robust project versioning capabilities that enable filmmakers to manage iterations and creative branching, which proves crucial for agile AI-powered projects where rapid changes are common.

  • Local file organization and renaming features help creators maintain clean project structures while working with multiple AI-generated assets from different platforms.

  • The tool serves as a compatibility-focused backbone that works with multiple AI image and video generation pipelines, enhancing creative control and team efficiency across different workflows.

  • As an open-source solution, Shotbuddy allows developers and filmmakers to customize the tool for their specific production needs and contribute to its ongoing development.

Bipartisan US Bill Aims to Restrict Data for AI Training

Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Josh Hawley (R-MO) introduced bipartisan legislation that would require AI companies to get explicit consent before using copyrighted materials to train their models. The AI Accountability and Personal Data Protection Act also allows creators to sue companies that use their work without permission.

  • The bill prohibits AI training on any copyrighted material—including scripts, images, music, and video content—without documented consent from rights holders, potentially upending how companies like OpenAI and Google develop their models.

  • Creators gain the right to file individual and class-action lawsuits in federal court, with statutory damages starting at $1,000 per violation, giving artists and writers significant legal leverage against unauthorized use.

  • The legislation defines covered data expansively to include both registered and unregistered copyrighted works, meaning even social media posts and personal photos would require explicit permission for AI training purposes.

  • AI companies can only defend themselves by proving they obtained documented explicit consent, with no fair use exceptions written into the bill's language, marking a major shift from current industry practices.

  • Industry groups have already signaled opposition, calling the consent mandate “unworkable at scale.”

The bill is still in the introductory stage, having been referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee with no hearings or mark-ups yet scheduled

Veo 3 Sketch to Direct Trick

Google Labs featured a Veo 3 (and 2) trick that can help provide more visual control over outputs by just annotating the starting frame.

This isn't as robust as a tool like Runway References, and you're giving up a second or two at the start of your video for the markup notes to erase. But another useful trick if you're looking for a few seconds with specific direction.
