Blackmagic Design has announced the PYXIS 12K, a compact full-frame cinema camera that shoots 12K footage while offering 4K and 8K recording from the full sensor area without cropping – a significant advantage for filmmakers who need resolution flexibility without changing field of view.
The PYXIS 12K utilizes the same 12K RGBW sensor technology as Blackmagic's URSA Mini 12K, but packages it in the smaller PYXIS body that matches the form factor of last year's PYXIS 6K.
The camera achieves frame rates up to 60fps in 12K, and up to 112fps in 4K and 8K modes
Features improved sensor response times, reducing the need for global shutter
Uses Blackmagic RAW codec, making the large-resolution files more manageable for editing workflows
Available in three mount options: L-mount, PL-mount, and EF-mount
The PYXIS 12K adds 10Gb Ethernet for faster file transfers while maintaining versatile recording options.
Includes CFExpress card slot for high-speed internal recording (including 12K)
USB-C port for recording directly to external drives for longer recording sessions
Compatible with the URSA Cine EVF and the new PYXIS Monitor
Works with Blackmagic's new Pro Grip with OLED viewfinder and integrated microphone
The PYXIS 12K delivers significant workflow advantages for productions seeking high-resolution acquisition.
The RGBW sensor design allows shooting in 4K and 8K using the full sensor area—eliminating the field-of-view changes typically experienced when changing resolutions
This capability provides cinematographers flexibility to capture at optimal resolution for each shot without changing lenses
Maintains the same compact, modular design philosophy as the 6K model, allowing custom configurations
The Blackmagic PYXIS 12K is expected to ship later this summer with a base price of $4,995 (before applicable tariffs). This pricing positions it competitively in the cinema camera market while offering significantly higher resolution than comparably priced cameras.
