About Animated Drawings
Animated Drawings is a web application developed by Meta's Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) lab that transforms static hand-drawn sketches into animated characters. The tool handles the technical heavy lifting of character rigging and animation automatically, making character animation accessible to artists without specialized 3D or animation software skills.
The workflow is straightforward: users upload or draw their sketch, and the system processes it to create an animated character. The automation eliminates the need for manual rigging, skeletal setup, or keyframe animation—tasks that traditionally require significant technical expertise. This makes it particularly valuable for concept artists, storyboarders, and animators who want to quickly validate character designs or create simple animated assets without context-switching to dedicated animation software.
Animated Drawings is best suited for rapid prototyping, pre-visualization, and ideation phases of production. It works well for character design exploration, simple explainer animations, social media content, and educational use. The web-based interface means no installation is required and results are immediately shareable. However, the tool is designed for relatively simple character animation and sketch-to-animation conversion—it's not positioned as a replacement for professional animation software like Maya, Blender, or Unreal Engine for complex rigged character work or detailed motion control. Output quality and animation complexity will naturally be constrained by the sketch input and the system's automation capabilities.
