About EbSynth

EbSynth is a specialized VFX tool for transforming video by editing just a handful of still frames. Developed by Secret Weapons, Inc., it’s designed for creative video stylization, rotoscoping, digital makeup, colorization, and other shot-level fixes where traditional frame‑by‑frame work would be too slow. You load a video, pick one or more keyframes, modify those stills in an external editor (like Photoshop, Krita, or an AI image tool), and EbSynth automatically transfers the appearance of the edited keyframes onto the rest of the clip.

Under the hood, EbSynth uses example-based texture synthesis and guided image correspondence rather than neural networks or diffusion models. The system analyzes the original footage and the edited keyframe, then re-synthesizes each target frame to match the edit while following motion and preserving detail. This allows for convincing hand‑painted or illustrated looks, as well as subtle retouching, without the temporal flicker often seen in naïve per-frame style transfer. Version 2 is delivered as a browser-based application (with Chrome recommended for larger projects), while the original EbSynth is a free downloadable desktop utility often run on Windows and macOS.

EbSynth is aimed at VFX artists, motion designers, indie filmmakers, animators, and content creators who want “Photoshop for video” style workflows. It’s particularly strong for turning live-action footage into animation-like sequences, automatic in-betweening of hand-edited frames, applying digital makeup or cleanup, and experimenting with bold visual styles without committing to full animation pipelines. Many artists use AI or painting tools to create their keyframes and then rely on EbSynth to propagate that look across the shot.

There are notable limitations. EbSynth is not a text-to-video or image-generation model: it doesn’t invent new content from prompts, nor is it a timeline-based NLE. It expects reasonably consistent motion and can struggle with extreme occlusions, fast motion, or major new objects appearing in the scene, which may require multiple keyframes or manual fixes. Performance and project size can be constrained by browser resources in EbSynth 2, and there is no deeply integrated plugin workflow for tools like Premiere or After Effects—you typically round-trip via image sequences. Still, for its niche of style transfer and frame-propagation-based VFX, EbSynth is a lean, focused tool that can dramatically reduce manual labor compared to traditional rotoscoping or hand-animated approaches.
