Axle AI has purchased the Portfolio digital asset management product line from Extensis, a Monotype company. The acquisition reflects a broader industry shift toward on-premise workflows driven by cost concerns and fears that cloud-based AI tools may scrape creative assets for generative training.

Axle AI formed a new division, Portfolio DAM, LLC, to manage the product. Portfolio serves 1,500+ customer sites worldwide, including the World Bank, Oxford's Bodleian Library, and General Electric.

The On-Premise Advantage

The real story here is the shift in where creative teams want their media to live. Axle AI sees a clear move away from cloud solutions toward on-premise systems. The drivers: cost, security, and a specific concern that cloud-based AI tools may "scrape" images and videos for later generative use.

"We're capitalizing on the worldwide trend towards on-premise creative workflows, which have driven accelerating double-digit annual growth for Axle AI since its founding," said Sam Bogoch, CEO of Axle AI. "As file sizes get larger and social media necessitates faster turnaround times, there's no substitute for having all your assets centralized."

Axle AI's solutions run completely on-premise, with no cloud services. This positioning directly addresses the anxiety many creative teams now feel about their content being exposed to public cloud tools.

What's Changing

Portfolio 4.1.1 is entering beta testing. The update includes security upgrades to Apache Tomcat and Java Runtime Environment, plus a significant shift: Portfolio's server can now run on Windows 10 and 11 desktop operating systems for smaller workgroups (5-10 users), making it more cost-effective for teams that don't need a dedicated server.

The product also now supports the latest macOS and Windows releases for browser and desktop interfaces.

Why This Matters

Following Monotype's acquisition of Extensis in November 2024, the parent company determined that Axle AI was the better long-term home for Portfolio. The move ensures dedicated expertise and continued innovation for a product with a loyal customer base.

"Portfolio has built an incredibly loyal community over the years, and it was important to us to find the right long-term home for both the product and its customers," said Bernie Gracy, Managing Director of Extensis and Chief Digital Officer of Monotype. "Axle AI's deep focus on digital asset management makes them a natural fit."

Axle AI hired Richard Bamford, a longtime Portfolio product specialist with more than two decades in the DAM industry, as Product Manager for Portfolio DAM. Bamford will lead the roadmap development with teams and customers worldwide.

The Bigger Picture

This acquisition sits within a larger trend: creative professionals are pulling their media back from the cloud. We previously covered Axle AI's expansion to Mac Mini and Mac Studio platforms, reflecting the same priority on local processing and content security.

For media teams managing large asset libraries, the appeal is straightforward. Centralized on-premise storage eliminates the sprawl of cloud services, reduces exposure to generative AI training, and keeps file management under direct control.
