DaVinci Resolve 20: How AI-Powered Tools Are Changing the Editing Workflow

Blackmagic Design has released the public beta of DaVinci Resolve 20, packed with AI assistant features and workflow enhancements aimed at accelerating post-production tasks while maintaining creative control.

Intelligent Assistant Editing: The new AI tools handle tedious tasks while preserving creative decisions

The IntelliScript feature analyzes dialogue scripts against footage and automatically creates a rough cut with alternate takes placed on separate tracks. This approach follows the 80-20 principle, where AI handles the time-consuming initial assembly while editors focus on creative refinement.

  • IntelliCut and AI Multicam Smartswitch detect speakers and automatically create cuts between cameras, even identifying speakers by mouth movement when separate audio tracks aren't available

  • AI Music Editor adjusts music duration through a simple drag interface, automatically creating natural-sounding edits that preserve musical integrity

  • AI Audio Mastering automatically organizes tracks, applies appropriate levels between dialogue, music, and effects, and creates a balanced mix foundation

Content Creation Tools: New features address growing demand for social and podcast workflows

Blackmagic has expanded Resolve's toolset to better serve content creators working across multiple platforms with several key additions:

  • Built-in voice recorder simplifies podcast and voiceover workflows with one-click recording directly in the edit timeline

  • Animated captions bring attention to dialogue with customizable word-by-word highlighting effects

  • Extended language support increases captioning options for international distribution

The Cutting Room Floor: The most significant impacts may come from quality-of-life improvements

While AI features capture headlines, Resolve 20 also addresses long-standing workflow pain points that will save editors considerable time on daily tasks:

  • Transform tools now include a dedicated keyframe editor with Bezier curve controls previously only available in the Fusion page

  • Source tape mode, previously only in the Cut page, now works in the Edit page for faster content review

  • AI Set Extender (coming later this year) will allow editors to extend sets beyond the frame using text prompts

DaVinci Resolve 20 is available as a free public beta download, with the final release planned as a free upgrade for existing Resolve Studio users.
